Before You Hand Over the Keys

Moving is quite the process. For a period of time, you have to work in, care for, and think about not one, but two locations. Moving out well is just as important as being prepared to move into your new home or business space. 

In addition to making sure you move all of your belongings out and completing any needed repairs or upgrades before you move, you will also need to complete a full deep clean of your building. We have provided this moving cleaning checklist to help you remember all the nooks and crannies.

Detailed Move-out Cleaning Checklist

Bathroom

Make sure that the toilet, shower, and sink are spotless. 

Sanitize or disinfect surfaces with a cleaner that is safe and designed for bathroom use.

If you are leaving the shower curtain, clean it with a solution that will retard mold growth;, allow to air dry fully. 

Kitchen

Clean the microwave inside and out. Be sure to remove all food and grease residue.

Remove all food from the refrigerator and freezer. Take out removable drawers and shelves and wash thoroughly. Dry before replacing them. Wipe down the appliance inside and out including the handles and gaskets around the doors.

Clean stove burners and drip trays. Remove and clean oven racks. Clean the door and inside of the oven thoroughly. Wipe down the top and sides of the stove and oven.

Windows and Walls

Remove and clean window screens. Clean window panes and frames inside and outside. If possible, remove windows and clean the tracks of the frames. 

Wipe down all walls with water and a cleaner that is safe for that surface. Thoroughly check for cobwebs, especially in corners. 

Ceilings and Floors

Wipe down all ceilings and ceiling fans with a cleaner that is safe for those surfaces. 

Vacuum, mop, or sweep all floors. Floors should be one of the last things you clean. 

Cabinets

Be sure to remove all personal belongings from your cabinets. Wipe down the outside of the cabinets and any shelving. Don’t forget to clean the tops of any cabinets that do not go up to the ceiling. 

Light Fixtures

Dust light fixtures and replace any burnt-out light bulbs.

Porch, Garage, Attic, Basement

Each of these places requires special attention. 

Sweep off your porch and knock down any cobwebs. If mold, dirt, or pollen has built up you may need to scrub that off. 

Clean your garage walls, shelving, windows, and floors. 

Thoroughly inspect your attic and basement for cobwebs and mold, removing anything that you find. Clean walls, shelving, windows, floors, and ceilings as appropriate.
